A First Timers Impression of China

A “First Timers” Impression of China:   In 2009, my wife, Shelley and I visited China for the first time.  For the most part, all I knew about China was what I learned in school and heard from my mother who often said, “Eat all of your food.  After all, there are people in China who are starving”.  And of course, I knew what I was told by the media as I watched the news; that they rival the U.S. as a Superpower, are on track to pass the U.S. economically, etc.  We had a whirlwind opportunity to do “touristy” things like seeing the Great Wall of China, Chairman Mao’s tomb, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, etc. It is a beautiful...

Pure Religion Found In China

“Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this:  to visit orphans and widows in their distress and keep oneself unstained by the world”.  (James 1:27)  In 2009, during our first visit to China, we found that the Bethel Orphanage for Blind Children in China is an oasis of pure and undefiled religion.  The Bethel or Jici Orphanage, founded by a French couple, Guillaume and Delphine Gauvain, is located on the outskirts of Beijing and is home to about 50 children with various degrees of visual impairments. Many of the children are also victims of physical, sexual or emotional abuse as well.   This was a special destination for Shelley...
