Unseen Bondage...

... Women in Cults You see a woman clothed in black from head to foot, with only a slit revealing her sorrowful eyes. Seeing her, you think, “The religious culture this woman lives in obviously oppresses her.” But what about a woman who looks like the mother on The Brady Bunch? She could be your neighbor, a co-worker, your child’s teacher. And she belongs to one of the many cults that now populate our nation. She doesn’t look oppressed. But she is—because her religious culture demeans women and uses them. For example, her religion may teach her that her husband is a god… and she must obey his every whim. Or, she may be taught that it is God’s will that...

What is it like to be a woman in an Islamic country?

She is… She is an outcast in her own country.  She faces death threats and persecution from the government.  She is a missionary whose sacrifice is great.  She has suffered much loss, pain, sadness and rejection, but yet she still serves the Lord.  Sister N. is a woman of determination.  She is not easily discouraged and will not give up.   After failing to become a “good Muslim” by becoming pregnant at the age of 15, Sister N. received 100 lashes and was thrown into prison.  During the 7th month of her pregnancy she began to have complications.  She begged the prison guards to take her to the hospital. ...

A Time For Hope

A New Book From ANM Press Imagine pastoring a church just a short distance from Ground Zero in New York. Imagine having to deal with the sorrow, horror and shock that followed the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Imagine having to help put lives back together again, and trying to make sense of it all. For Dave Epstein this was not something he had to imagine. He lived it. He is the pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in New York. In the aftermath of 9/11 Pastor Epstein delivered a seres of messages to his congregation offering spiritual and emotional insight and help, and the love of God. This book contains these addresses. Pastor Epstein brings the timeless message of the...

India Missions

Beauty for Ashes: Two Weeks in India       It’s 5:30 in the morning and the first sounds we hear are birds chirping outside the window. And yet an even sweeter sound competes with the tranquility of the dawn of another day. It’s the sound of children’s voices lifted in songs praising the one true God, Jesus. What children rise at such an early time to praise, worship and pray? The 70 children of Rehoboth Home, an orphanage begun by Malliga Chandran and her husband.  On July 13th a team of 8 people from ANM came to minister and work with the children, teachers, staff and HIV widows there. I was part of that team.     Every day we are...

Bills Barbecue, American Indians and ANM

Bill's Barbecue is a Richmond tradition.  Growing up in the suburbs of Virginia's capital you naturally learned to love this typical southern fare.  Delicious minced barbecue sandwiches, homemade limeades, and chocolate pie.  Yummy.  So when the Media Department recently took a field trip to Richmond for day of R & R after a busy season in the offices, I really wanted us to eat at Bill's. Our field trip was wonderful.  We were able to see some of the history and variety of Richmond.  We enjoyed a wonderful time of good fellowship.  And, yes, we got to eat at Bill's Barbecue.  That in itself proved to be an adventure.  Our Director for A-V ministry,...

Music that tells...

A note from Mindy Spurrier, ANM Next Generation Director: God always has a purpose and a plan. When I first came to Advancing Native Missions (ANM) five years ago, one of the staff said, “Why is God bringing a music teacher to ANM?” Well, to be honest, I myself sometimes wondered why God had taught me so much about music then brought me to a missions organization. But in the last few years, God has been revealing his plans in the most exciting ways. The ANM Next Generation Department, which I direct, has begun developing curriculum for the American church to teach their children about how God is using native missionaries to reach the remaining unreached. With a grateful...

Help Feed The Hungry In Somalia

Dear Christian Friends:  You have very likely been watching the reports coming out of east Africa.  Millions are suffering the dreadful consequences of a devastating drought.  Untold numbers are facing death in this crisis.  Probably many of you have been touched by the images of the drought-stricken victims of Somalia in particular, and wondered if there is any way you could help.   Now we can offer you an opportunity to do just that.  ANM is working with a Christian ministry that is on the ground and offering relief directly to the suffering people of Somalia.  The following is a letter from the missionary leader of this ministry, with...

Our Prayers Were Answered

OUR PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED FOR... A Tractor and A Roof! Many of you received an email communication the beginning of last month (and you may have received the newsletter) concerning a need for Williams and Naomi Yindi from Unreached Peoples' Mission.  We are delighted to report to you the good results from that appeal, all of which came together in less than two months. God provided the funds to purchase the much needed tractor as well as the steel trusses to complete the church roof--which has been roofless for over three years.  The Yindis also needed 400 chairs, file cabinets, musical instruments, chalk boards, soccer balls, vitamins, transformers, and several...

Woman Delivered From Curse

A testimony from Maharashtra Village Ministries One of our many testimonies comes from Praful N. Swanker:   “My home was in turmoil. Our neighbors had a disagreement with my mother and cast an evil spirit on her. Each day her health deteriorated a little more. Priests and doctors offered no relief. An uncle suggested that we take her to the local missionary because he had heard that the name of Jesus was powerful. Desperate for deliverance from the clutches of this evil, the whole family began to attend the church fellowship run by Maharashtra Village Ministries' missionary Suresh Mohure. Through their compassion and prayer, mother was totally delivered and healed! As a result,...

Reaching the Remaining Unreached

Matthew 24:14 is the vision, heartbeat and ultimate goal of all we do at ANM.  Our passion is to enable our international partners to reach the unreached peoples of the earth.  This has been our focus since we began this mission in 1992.  It still remains the primary aim of this ministry.  To help achieve this very doable goal, we have launched a renewed effort to research, identify, and then help our partners evangelize the Unreached People Groups within their sphere of influence.  We call this endeavor Reaching the Remaining Unreached (RRU).  This effort is spearheaded by two brothers, Jonathan Cortes of Singapore, and one of our Board Members, Mr. Ron Tillett. ...

Medical Ministry Needs a New Vehicle

Would you consider helping Philippine Gospel Association (PGA) purchase a new ministry vehicle for their medical outreaches?  Take a look at project #504 on our project page (for more information) and also go to our Southeast Asia tab and check out PGA's page.  The cost for this new vehicle is $15,000.00 but if many join in to help reach the goal, this ministry team could be using their new ministry vehicle in a short amount of time. The photo posted is one style of vehicle and PGA has decided to purhase a Kia L270  that seats 19 people. UPDATE: The ministry has collected $1458.25 and now they only need 13541.75 to be able to purchase this vehicle....

A Legacy of Love

Living Rock Bible School has held 23 commencement exercises since it started.    Emily Montes, a graduate of the school is the product of a wonderful couple whose dedication and love for the Lord caused the ministry to grow with few resources.  Once Emily graduated she felt the call to stay at the school and continue the work.     Emily pondered her life and stated this:  "Because of His ever sufficient grace, I am able to do what I do."  She knows that the Bible school helped build her faith and that God is always by her side.    Emily and her husband, Paul, carry on the work of Paul's parents.  Rizzy, has gone on to be with the Lord,...

By the grace of God, I will continue his work

"By the grace of God, I will continue his work" God hears the prayers of a widow...    Manjula Mathew is truly a mighty woman of God.  Born into an Orthodox Hindu family, her family worshipped many idols.  In 1966, she married a Hindu man and two years later had a daughter.  There was always fighting in her home and she felt like she never had peace.  In 1970, her husband became very ill and required surgery.  His spleen was removed, but in the end he succomed to his illness, leaving his family in shock.  In June that year, Jesus appered to her in a dream and asked her to follow him.  However, she continued to worship idols.  A few years...

The Story of St. Patrick

He was from a religious background, but not particularly religious himself.  He committed the typical sins of the youths of his time.  He was kidnapped at the age of 16, and sold into slavery.  He was taken to a land far from his home where he was forced to serve a cruel master for six long years.  Then, he made a bold escape.  He managed a journey of 200 miles on foot to the coast of the sea.  And there he found a miraculous deliverance from the land of his servitude!  Does this sound like the plot of a Hollywood film?  Maybe it should be, but it's not.  It is part of the story of Patrick of Ireland. Patrick was a man who...

Tribal Chief Finds Christ

Nine years ago we at NLM showed the Jesus film to members of the Yalmo tribe in Darjeeling. A chief of this tribe named C.B. Khati was adamantly against Christianity and was even successful in reconverting Christians back to Hinduism by performing Hindu rituals. In June of 2010 he called our pastor in the area for prayer because he was suffering from extreme sugar diabetes problems. The pastor saw him, prayed for him and then returned home.Three days later he called the pastor back saying, "My wife and I want to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. I'm not going to live much longer and before I leave this world I want to be saved. I know that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth,...

The Restoration of Rosy

A girl named Rosy married a hard-working yound man and they had two beautiful children. For ten years they lived happily in peace until Rosy's husband began drinking in 2009. It did not take long for the habit to affect his whole family. Frequent fights broke out his new addiction left Rosy and the children without their basic needs. One night an argument broke out as usual. In a rage, Rosy's husband grabbed a knife and drove it into her throat, severing her vocal cords. He then did the same to himself, as kids were crying in the background. Paramedics arrived, and emergency surgeries were performed on both of them. While she was in the hospital a "man" came into her room and told her...

The Fire in my Heart

I am one of the teachers at GEBS as I want to share the things that God has taught me. I thank God for GEBS and for the people whom He his using to challenge me to really live by faith. To God be the glory! My name is Glory Suplico from the province of Palawan. I enrolled in GEBS in 2007, leaving my husband and two children in Palawan. In spite of hardships, financially and emotionally, I was able to endure because I truly love the Lord Who called me. He has proven to be true to His promises. I am now in my third yead in the seminary. My husband and two daughters are now with me at GEBS. God has been so faithful in providing for our needs. I am earnestly praying that the fire in my heart...

Wise Words

The following words of wisdom were sent to us by one of our native missionary partners... A Few Important Truths This Week...  ·         You are most like God when you do two things – when you love and when you forgive. ·         Whenever your faith is tested, something glorious is about to happen. ·         The greater the warfare, the greater the blessing that is coming. ·         The greater the delay to persevering prayer, the greater the answer when it arrives. ·        ...

No Longer Abandoned

God used a woman in our church to rescue her nephew named Chui. Shortly after his birth, Chui's mother dumped him at his grandma's house, and she was never heard from again. When Chui was four-years-old his grandmother suddenly died and he was left homeless. By the young age of eight he was addicted to cocaine. When he turned 13, he was taken to a rehabilitation jail. However, when he was ready to be released at age 18, there was no home to go to and no one to take him. Feeling abandoned he began cutting himself and he tried to escape. For punishment he was put in a cooler cell for three months! In November his aunt who is a member of our church, went to get him. The following Sunday, she brought...

A Second Chance from God

I am Pastor Sellry Eli Pioquinto. I came to GEBS when I was a boy. My aunt took me here and I said then, "When I grow up I would study here." However, being an only child, I was overprotected by my parents. After high school I studied in different secular schools in Bacolod City but did not finish because I knew God had called me to the ministry. I enrolled in Doane Baptist Seminary with sufficient support but i abused  God's blessings. In my third year I was disciplined. In defiance, I left the seminary, went to Manila and stayed away from the Lord. For seven years I wasted my time and lived in the world. But I praise God that whomever He loves, He chastens. I returned home repentant and...

Knitting Hats for Jesus

We have been blessed and encouraged so much by Carolyn, a sweet, industrious widow who continues to knit hats for the warehouse.  The first time she called us, she told us she had “lots of hats” and was wondering if we could use them.   When we went to pick them up we were blown away!   We loaded boxes and boxes of “hats for Jesus” into the mission van.   Imagine our surprise and delight when we began counting them and discovered she had knit just under two thousand colorful, attractive hats!  Two hundred went into the Middle East container and the majority went on the Republic of Georgia container to warm the heads of many adults and...

Ears That Hear, Eyes That See!

One of our ministry partners has a need for an otoscope and opthalmoscope set. Philippine Gospel Association is a medical missions team serving those in need in the Philippines. These instruments, which are used for checking the ears and eyes would be a wonderful addition to their current equipment. Many of the medical outreaches they hold have individuals that have severe problems but without proper equipment, it goes undetected. A Garage Sale for Missions

A  garage sale is another good tool for your ministry, group or organization to use for raising funds. This idea comes from a church in Maryland and is supplied by a staff member here at Advancing Native Missions (Thank you JoAnne). Their church did this annually to raise funding for their missions outreach. The idea is to sell space to people in the community who are interested in participating in a neighborhood garage sale. You make money on the spaces sold but you also have members of the church or organization donate items that will also be sold with all proceeds going to missions.    The method used was to also combine the sale with a family fun day...

Philippine Gospel Association (PGA) is a medical missions team that ministers to the poor and needy in the islands of the Philippines.  As doctors, their HEARTS are for those that may not have a means of medical attention without their help. More importantly, they share the love of Christ to each patient that attends one of their clinics. Though physical hearts may have medical problems, PGA realizes that knowing Jesus is the "real heart" problem.  PGA is in need of a portable ECG Machine FME 501X to assist them on their medical outreaches. Would you consider making an investment to help purchase this equipment?  If your "heart" is touched by this need, please see project...

Raising Funds Made Fun!

Another idea for meeting a project need: A co-worker of mine shared that her local church gave small piggy banks to the members of the church (this could also be broken down to the children's ministry or just the adults).  Each person takes their pig home and attempts to weekly fill it up in any creative way imaginable.  Every week, on a given day, the pigs are brought to the church and emptied into a larger container.  The class that raises the most money receives a pizza party or some other form of award for their hard work.  The contest can be set for a certain number of weeks and the funds can be given to missions as a church or...

Most missionaries need certain things to maximize the fruitfulness of his/her Christian ministry: Vehicles (bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, jeeps, boats) to help take the Gospel to the lost and avoid miles of walking on foot. Bibles or other Christian literature (tracts, Bible study guides) Computers (and related equipment such as printers) for word processing, record-keeping, and sending updates through e-mail And sometimes, native missionaries encounter special needs for larger projects such as church buildings, funds for children’s...

Reporting from Guatemala

The following is a report received on January 16th from one of our ANM staff members who is leading a short-term missions trip to Guatemala: Just wanted to check in briefly while I have internet access to let you know that my two teams arrived safely in Guatemala yesterday. The team I traveled with had an interesting experience while traveling and were late getting here. We arrived four hours late and after everyone else got here, but we arrived safely, although a little tired. We got a great night's sleep last night which refreshed us. Today we went to church in the morning and spent the afternoon here at the mission. One team spent the time getting to know and play with the orphans. The university...

Good News From India

Dear ANM Family, Loving greetings to you India. Thank you for your prayer and contribution which has enabled us to bless many in the name of Jesus, so that their lives will be meaningful and fruitful for the Lord and for India. The church in Orissa is growing inspite of so many hurdles. The believers are more strong than before though their rehabilitation is not completed.  We are praying for God's blessing on them in 2011. Our churches are celebrating Christmas with  joy. The believers in this cold season are full of happiness to remember God's love through His son Jesus Christ.  Many of the refugees are still living in tents, for they have not completed their houses. Tears Of A Widow

"Everything we do is started with prayer and we give God the glory for all He has done."  Malliga Chandran started the Rehoboth Home for Children as a refuge for orphans in India. Malliga and her husband work tirelessly to offer the children of Rehoboth Home safety, unconditional love, and a family.  Rehoboth Home for children is a place orphans can call home.  Each child is given an opportunity to learn about the love of Jesus Christ.  To hear the children sing of God's love in their broken English is truly remarkable in this community of Hindu worshipers.  Malliga's dream to spread the love of Jesus has grown into more than she could have imagined.  God...

The Light Shines in Iran

Thank you for helping us shine the light of Christ into Iran this year. The light cannot be contained. In Iran today, once the light shines on one family member, it soon reaches others. The light shines in Tehran : Mona began witnessing to a lady she met in Tehran . To her surprise, the lady, Sahar, told Mona that she and her husband, Issa, had already met Christ but had no one to help them grow as believers. Sahar asked Mona if someone could teach and disciple them.  Mona arranged for two Elam graduates to meet with Sahar and Issa every two weeks. Each time they met, other members of their family joined them, and each time two people came to faith in Christ - a father, sister, mother,...

A Native Missions Christmas Story

The Southeast Asia Christmas Story God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground." (Genesis 1:28) Mankind was meant to fill the earth and subdue it. It was God’s command. Yet the post flood inhabitants seemed to want to stay in one place and make a name for themselves. "So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the...

Merapi had to evacuate down into another location about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the villages where they were located.  They were forced to do this to escape the hot volcanic clouds.  So far our location is okay, even though white ashes are...

A Native Missionary Looks At Diwali

Diwali is the "festival of lights" that originated with Hinduism but is now celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs.  The festival honors several religious events.  It also pays homage to Lakshmi, the consort of the Hindu God Vishnu. This year, 2010, Diwali begins on Friday, November 5.  The festival lasts for five days, and is a national holiday in India. Diwali is a good time to remember that as Christians we honor the true Light of the World--Jesus Christ.  He is the Light that has come to every man, bringing the shining truth of the Gospel and liberating brillance of the message of His sacrificial life and death.  ...

Looking for a cool way to raise support for a mission project?   Is your youth group, church or family willing to work to provide income to meet a need?  How about running a "rent-a-kid" program.  IT'S EASY!  Placing posters in your local area or church stating that children and youth are available to provide odd job services for donations. This is a wonderful way to raise support and makes the giving much more meaningful.  Perhaps cleaning a car or home, mowing the lawn or raking, planting grass. etc., the ideas and methods are endless.  Consider picking a project from our project list and then be creative! ...

This was to boost their self image – to accept themselves as God’s wonderful creation.  One woman testified that she had never accepted herself and suffered from very low self esteem.  God spoke to her heart to love the way He had made her.   This session was followed by beauty care. Ministry to the Pygmies

Sixty years of age and married 40 years, Pastor Ebongo and his wife live in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.  For the past six years he has been faithfully reaching out to one of the "least reached" people groups of our world - the Batwa people, better known to the Western world as the "pygmies."  It is estimated that 450,000 pygmies live in the rain forests of central Africa.  They live in very primitive conditions suffering from disease, discrimination, and, at times, even cannibalism from other tribes.  Twelve of these "for whom Christ died" were part of the OBI in Kinshasa, the capitol of the Congo.  There they discovered love and acceptance. OBI can change a life!

Sukarna was a government official in this north Indian state.  His life was without purpose; his family was in shambles.  At the invitation of his brother-in-law he attended an OBI in Gangtok in 2005.  At that conference his life was completely changed as he dedicated his life to God.  We met him again in the OBI in Siliguri in 2008.  This time he came as a spiritual leader with a stable family and is involved in the work of sharing the Good News in north India.  He thanked God for OBI!...

Blankets for the cold, brings warmth to the heart!

A simple blanket!  Many people in the world have one, most people have extras in closets, just in case.  Imagine living in an area of the world where temperatures can become extremely cold and not owning one blanket.  This ministry based in the Northwestern part of India shares the love of Christ in many ways.  One wonderful way is giving a blanket to those in need.  The photo attached shows the joy of members of a leper colony (radiant smiles and laughter).  Phyically they suffer, but this ministry is taking the time to show them love.  If purchasing a blanket is something you would like to do, see project # 241 for more information. ...

Shoesboxes are not just for Shoes

Purchase a new pair of shoes and throw away the box - that's how I do it!  Yet, in Kashmir, India, shoesboxes are being recycled to bless many children.  You ask how?  The Ministry of KEF fills empty shoeboxes with simple gifts bringing joy to the hearts of children.  This is an exciting, effective project that I am certain you will want to be a part of.  Read more about this on project # 242....

Jerry Harding, Co-Director of OBI, just returned from Honduras where he and a group of pastors conducted an OBI conference with one of our valued partners. At the same time, an ANM medical team was established to provide examinations, medicines and help to our pastors. There was a tremendous moving of God and both the OBI team and medical team reported tremendous blessings.  ...

Purchasing Bicycles for India

To preach God's Word to the lost, missionaries go from village to village by foot.  With a bicycle, more villages can be reached in the same amount of time, protecting the missionary from aching legs and feet.  Want to help a missionary obtain a bicycle and increase the effectiveness of his ministry?  Check out project # 62 and bring smiles of joy to a native missionary today!...

Planning for 2011

Well, it may be August, but Advancing Native Missions is already planning and praying for 2011. ANM's construction team, Barnabas teams, and many others have begun scheduling trips to go and serve. Even our OCH team has also been busy starting plans for missions trips in 2011. So far it looks like our team will be leading trips to serve alongside native missionaries in India, Ghana, the Philippines, and maybe more countries. There are so many options here at Advancing Native Missions to go and serve alongside native missionaries, to see and experience what God is doing. We would encourage you, if you have ever wanted to take a trip, please contact us today and we would love to share with you...

PARTNER with us to ENGAGE the NEXT GENERATION!

One of our main goals is to find ways to engage the next generation in what God is doing through native missions. But we need your help, and we need your prayers. Please continue to pray that  God's power, presence, and guidance will be our strength and ever-present help. We have found that to engage means "to make active". Therefore, we must: educate the next generation about native missions by developing fun, interactive, native missions-minded, God-centered curriculum/resources so children & youth leaders are empowered. stress the importance of prayer by giving children & students ways they can pray for native missionaries. give opportunities to students to use their talents...

A Light in the Darkness

Togo, Africa, is a country that is held in great spiritual darkness. Many of the villagers there live under the control of voodoo. Witch doctors use these practices to cast spells on the people and cause them to become sick or even die. The villagers cling to this darkness for fear of the witch doctors and also because they make a profit from selling hand-crafted objects to tourists who don't realize the strong voodoo connections these items have. But there is at least one ministry that is shining God's Light in the darkness. The workers of Army of Christ Mission (ACM) spend a lot of time on their knees. They first pray to determine which villages God is calling them to evangelize....

Bread, Fish and...Drums?

Bo Barredo, president of Advancing Native Missions, stands before a group of Filipino pastors. "This pastor and his wife have four children," he explains, motioning to the couple who stand next to him on the stage. "Since age 12, their oldest son has played the drums during their worship at church. He is now 17. His drum set is made from plastic bottles that he fills with water to make the different pitches. His cymbals are the lids from his mother's cooking pots, and even the lid from the slop jar in the bedroom. I think God would have us take an offering right now and buy this pastor's son a set of drums." As the invitation is given to place an offering in a basket near the stage, every pastor...

Family Ministry

Lily and Elise were raised by missionary parents. They grew up in a dangerous area where people were shot and killed on a daily basis and children were taken away from their parents and forced to serve in rag-tag armies. The girls ministered alongside their parents in a variety of ways until one day the family discovered that someone wanted them all dead. Lily and Elise followed their parents to the airport, hiding behind garbage cans and anything else that would provide them cover along the way. The family escaped to Florida, which provided a place of refuge for a time, but it wasn't long before God called them back to their native country to serve the war-torn people. Saying goodbye...

Pray for Guatemala

Author: Trisha Tolar   Last October I was privileged to visit Hope of Life, our ministry partner in Zacapa, Guatemala.  This ministry has a heart to reach the lost in Guatemala. On ministry location they have an orphanage, school, old person home, nutrition center, and warehouse. They also go out to the villages and do feeding programs and plant churches. God is doing an incredible work through His people. In the last month, there has been some major flooding in Guatemala. Help Colombia Hear

As June is coming to a close, we want to encourage you to continue praying for those native missionaries who are reaching their own peoples in Latin America. But before this month ends, we also want to share with you an opportunity to GIVE. Therefore, we have asked our ANM Warehouse Team to tell us how children, students, and teachers can help those in Columbia hear the Gospel, and they responded as follows:COLUMBIA: In the midst of great persecution, Christ to the Unreached Tribes has been bearing fruit for 29 years.  Their vision is to have 500 churches among the 80 tribes by 2015.  We at Advancing Native Missions want to be a part of this vision as we equip and encourage these dedicated...

Heal This Heart of Mine

Author: Rebekah   Monica is one of the most active people in her church. At only twelve years old, she reads better than most adults in her village. Since most of the village members are illiterate, they were curious to know the secret of Monica’s excellence in reading. Her answer is simply, “The Bible.” After one of the first church services that was held in her village by a neighboring ministry, Monica requested to be given a Bible so she could read these precious stories with her own eyes. Her determination to learn more about this Jesus caused her to excel at reading, and she became an inspiration to her classmates as she began to read the Scriptures to them.Then...

Tales of Summer Interns: Introducing Heidi Durham

Today we are introducing our third and final intern for the summer. Enjoy getting to know Heidi. Who Are You? My name is Heidi Durham. Tell Us A Little About Yourself: I am from Bradford, New York (which is upstate near Watkins Glen, in case you follow NASCAR). I am a senior at Liberty University with a major in graphic design and a minor in English. I love photography; it is my outlet. When I see things, I see them through a camera lens in my mind. Why Are You Interning With ANM? When I was in high school, God gave me the opportunity to be a part of two mission’s trips, one to Thailand and another to Australia. Since my first trip, I have always been drawn to missions. When I began...

In the Face of Rifles

Samuel thought he was going to die for sure. His heart pounded frantically in his chest as he considered what could very well be his last conscious thought. “What about my wife and children?” Children. It was children who had ambushed him. These boys were as young as thirteen years old. They had most likely been wrenched from their homes and forced to serve in this rag-tag group of guerilla soldiers. Samuel looked around once more, and suddenly he didn’t see a group of killers with guns trained on him. He saw a bunch of frightened, teenage boys. “You’re afraid,” he observed. “You’re afraid of the fact that you could die in any given moment. I have...

The Call of a Pastor

One day,  seventeen-year-old  Antonio  was near a church with his friends. They had been throwing rocks at the church building for weeks, but this day a bet was made. Whoever could sneak up to the front of the sanctuary and touch one of the girls who were praying would win this bet. Antonio stood in the doorway, waiting for a chance to make his move. Suddenly the pastor pointed straight at him, bidding him to come to the altar, but Antonio was not there to accept Jesus into his heart. He waited until the pastor closed his eyes in prayer before he slowly made his way forward.  But as he drew near, the pastor opened his eyes. He asked Antonio what he was doing there. “I...

How Beautiful on the Mountains

Take  a moment to consider the Himalayan Mountains. They are so beautifully breathtaking, attracting hundreds of tourists to the area... but only at certain times of the year. These mountains can be as dangerous as they are beautiful. The climate and temperatures are extreme. And yet there are people who call these mountains their home - people who live in isolation forced upon them by the cold and snow. Who reaches these people with the saving message of the Gospel? There are a few who would dare to venture into the dangerous realms. Native missionaries who were born and raised in the area, who were somehow reached with the Gospel, and who long to see their people be freed from...

The Miracle of Love

Romy Mendoza was skin and bones when he was found by a native missionary in the Philippines. Diagnosed with an acute and drug-resistant TB disease, Romy was waiting to die just as his parents and siblings had before him. The government doctor who examined Romy told the native missionary the sad news of Romy's condition, but even knowing how slim the boy's chance of survival was, this missionary took him into his home. Romy was taken to a Christian Medical Clinic where he stayed in the isolation room. For more than a year he was prayed for, fed, clothed, given medications, and most importantly, treated with loving care. After that year had passed, a doctor took his chest x-ray and declared that...

Expedition Tips

The 10/40 Expedition is up and running! Churches all over the United States are making their plans. What I find most exciting about these expedition preparations is that these hardworking children's ministers are sharing their wonderful ideas with me. In the past few weeks, I have heard so many amazing suggestions that I feel should be shared with others who may be leading an expedition. I will try to keep these posts coming faithfully every Saturday, so be sure to check back in for the latest expedition news. Now for tip #1... As you may know, the most unique part of The 10/40 Expedition is the opportunity to have a native missionary come share with your kids. We've had several people...

Youth Ideas for Summer

Happy Spring! It is a beautiful day here in Virginia. ANM is in the midst of a busy season preparing for summer activities and itinerating about 20 native missionaries. We are so thankful that God has given us the privilege to serve these ministries around the world and be a part of His Kingdom work. As we look towards making summer plans, we want to let you know about opportunities for your youth. If you are a youth leader, teacher, parent, a youth yourself, or someone involved with middle school, high school, or college students, then you don't want to miss this opportunity. Revival Among Children

A ministry in South East Asia recently conducted a children's camp. At first they were disappointed that only forty children showed up, but God would quickly reveal that He had big plans for this seemingly small group of kids. On March 10th, the Holy Spirit began moving among these kids. All forty of them felt convicted and began crying out, "Lord, forgive me of my sins!" This was followed by other confessions such as, "Mom and Dad, forgive me for telling lies to you." After the revival and repentance had taken place, the children continued to praise God until 12:30 at night. Even though the camp was only scheduled from March 8th through March 12th, the date was extended through March...

A Child's Heart for Missions

The 10/40 Expedition: Quest for the Lost Window's first pilot church was a huge success. Kids enjoyed the Biblical dramas, the cultural crafts, and even the regional snacks, but it was rather obvious to see that the majority's favorite part of the experience was getting to meet a native missionary. Donald works with a ministry in Mexico that runs a large variety of outreaches - many having to do with drug prevention. They formed a soccer team with the intention of keeping kids away from drugs and off the streets. They hold yearly youth camps and run breakfast outreaches in a poor village among their many, many other outreaches. Donald came to the US to share...

Student Missions: What's Your School Doing?

This week there have been two testimonies from schools that truly have touched us in our department. Both schools show what happens when students of all ages catch a vision and invest in God's work around the world. SCHOOL 1: A Christian school in Charlotte, NC, hosts a  missions week each year. Leading up to the week they introduce a project to the students and tell them to do extra chores, sell something, or do something to collect for the project. For the last few years they have collected money to send Bibles to Iran. This year they continued this project to send Bibles to Iranians who cherish the Word of God. The students truly went above and beyond what one could imagine....

Why Missions?

Those of you who have been hearing about “The 10/40 Expedition: Quest for the Lost Window” have probably posed the question: “Why missions?” Why is that the focus of this curriculum? Allow me to do what I do best and use a story to illustrate my answer… Once upon a time, there was a little girl. Let’s call her Alexa. Alexa was born into a family that supported native missions. She grew up hearing missionaries' stories that reminded her of the Bible stories about God’s miraculous provision. Alexa soaked in all that she heard about missions – especially when she was at missions conferences. The church she attended hosted these events once a year,...

Why Native Missions?

For the last few days, Trisha and I have have been traveling to visit friends, family, churches, and attend a few mission conferences. As we travel, there is one question that always comes up...Why Native Missions? Well, indigenous nationals are people who are sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their own country. We call these people native missionaries.  They are Christians in their home countries sharing their faith in Jesus Christ with their family, their friends, and their neighbors. They know the language and the culture -and that is half the battle. These Bible believing brothers and sisters are part of our family, the Body of Christ. If we pray for them, support them,...

Meet Trisha Tolar

Introducing Trisha Tolar, Director of Student Missions: I grew up in the church as a pastor’s kid. Most of my early memories are being in the church or with our church family. I am so thankful the Lord gave me the privilege of having wonderful Christian parents. When I was five years old I began asking my parents questions about God and what it meant to put my faith in God. They were very faithful in answering my questions and letting me know anytime I wanted to accept Christ as my Savior to let them know. I remember the day vividly. I was outside playing on my swing set by myself, and I felt this nudge that it was time, I was ready to take the step of accepting Christ as my Savior. I...

Missions Moment With a Senior in High School

Enjoy some thoughts from Erin Wyldes. She is a senior in high school and is a part of Ottumwa Community Church in Ottumwa Iowa. Her family has been supporting ANM for 16 years. Impacting young people to serve those around them and impact the world is the reason we do what we do. "Missions and ministry has always been an important thing in my life. Being a PK (pastors kid) I was brought up in ministry but throughout growing up I have learned to love missions.  To start out, my holy discontent would be caring for others. I feel really strong about not letting people fall to the way side, no matter who they are. I feel strongly for any one who suffers in any way. Another side to the struggle...
